Haslam Announces Nissan to Add Third Shift, 810 Jobs in Smyrna

Jobs for third shift announced at Governor’s Economic Development Conference

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced Nissan will add 810 new jobs at its Smyrna vehicle assembly plant for a third shift at the site.

The third shift for the Nissan plant is the company’s first ever at the plant in its nearly 30-year history in Smyrna, and with this announcement, the company has added more than 2,000 manufacturing jobs in Tennessee since mid-2011.

Grants Assist Communities with Infrastructure Improvements

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced 15 recipients of Community Development Block Grants that will assist with infrastructure improvements in area communities.  The grant recipients included Carroll County, Dresden, Gates, Henderson County, Huntingdon, Maury City, McKenzie, Newbern, Ripley, Samburg, Sardis, Scotts Hill, Sharon, Trezevant and Weakley County.  Additional CDBG recipients will be announced throughout October.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced the appointment of David Jones as a director on the newly reconfigured Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA).
 
Haslam, Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey (R-Blountville) and House Speaker Beth Harwell (R-Nashville) jointly appointed Jones, and he joins fellow TRA directors James Allison, Kenneth Hill, Herbert Hilliard and Sara Kyle.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced the appointments of two new members to boards overseeing Tennessee’s public colleges and universities.

Darrell Freeman of Brentwood will represent the 7th Congressional District on the Tennessee Board of Regents. Raja Jubran of Knoxville will represent the 2nd Congressional District on the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees.

More efficient and effective delivery of state services for taxpayers

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced that the state has been recognized as one of the top in the nation for use of digital technology to better serve Tennesseans and streamline operations.  Tennessee was among six states to receive a grade of A- in the 2012 Digital States Survey, which was up from a B+, the state’s grade in the 2010 survey.  Michigan and Utah were the only two states to receive an A.

“Our goal is for Tennessee to be the best managed state in the country, and technology plays a significant role in accomplishing that,” Haslam said.  “We are always looking to improve the way we deliver state services to Tennessee taxpayers, and will continue to enhance online options.”

Haslam Announces Madison County Parks Grant

Leeper Lane Park receives $250,000 for improvements

JACKSON – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced a Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) grant of $250,000 to further develop Leeper Lane Park in Jackson. The next phase of improvements at the park includes a new concession stand, restrooms and new ball field lights.

“Our quality of life is directly linked to the quality of our parks and outdoor spaces,” Haslam said. “Recreational facilities are important not only to Tennesseans but for the many visitors we attract to our state each year. It is great to be here today to celebrate the great work of the Madison County community.”

Panel in place to take up potential appeal of Hooker et al. v. Haslam et al.
