Haslam Releases Statement on SCORE Report

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today released a statement about the comprehensive report on the state’s teacher evaluation system issued by independent non-profit State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE).
 
In December 2011, Haslam asked SCORE to collect input and feedback on Tennessee’s teacher evaluation system, a key piece of the First to the Top legislation that positioned Tennessee to be one of the first two states awarded Race to the Top funding.

Imposes tougher penalties for domestic violence, felons with guns and gang activity

BARTLETT – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today held a ceremonial bill signing at the Bartlett Criminal Justice Center to highlight three pieces of public safety legislation.  The bills were a result of his administration’s multi-agency, comprehensive public safety action plan aimed at curbing violent crime, lowering the rate of repeat offenders, and significantly reducing drug abuse and drug trafficking in Tennessee.

“One of the key roles of state government is to keep citizens safe,” Haslam said. “These laws will play an important role in combating some of our state’s toughest safety challenges.”

Governor holds ceremonial bill signing in Gibson County highlighting impact on family farms

HUMBOLDT – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today traveled to Luckey Family Farm in Humboldt to highlight the second of three tax cuts passed during this year’s legislative session and signed by the governor.

Haslam held a ceremonial bill signing of HB 3760/SB 3762, which phases out the state inheritance tax during the next three years before it is completely eliminated starting January 1, 2016.

Legislation the first step in two-year effort to reduce sales tax on groceries to 5 percent

WHITWELL – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today traveled to Marion County to sign legislation to reduce the state portion of the sales tax on groceries from 5.5 percent to 5.25 percent.

Haslam held a ceremonial bill signing at the locally- and independently-owned Smith Bros. Grocery in Whitwell, Tenn.

Phillips-Jones to replace retiring Phillips in Eighth Judicial District

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced his appointment of Lori Phillips- Jones as District Attorney General for the Eighth Judicial District.

Phillips-Jones will replace current District Attorney General Paul Phillips when he retires September 1, 2012. The Eighth Judicial District is composed of Campbell, Claiborne, Fentress, Scott and Union counties.

Haslam Requests Farm Assistance for Hancock, Hawkins Counties

Warm winter and spring with an April freeze has impacted farmers

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced he has requested a secretarial designation of natural disaster for Hancock and Hawkins counties due to April’s freeze.  

Haslam made the request in a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. A secretarial designation would make farmers eligible to apply for lost income recovery, low-interest loans and other disaster assistance through the USDA Farm Service Agency.

Effort to increase performance, accountability and efficiency to operations
 
NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced he has signed two bills from his 2012 legislative agenda that make structural changes to the Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA) and 21 boards, commissions and licensing programs.
 
More than 200 of these organizations exist within state government, and many have independent hiring and spending authority with limited oversight. Haslam announced a review of state boards and commissions during his 2011 State of the State address, and after a comprehensive evaluation, he proposed reforms to improve performance, accountability and efficiency.
