USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Director Gene Davidson reminds crop and livestock producers throughout Tennessee who have recently experienced severe damage from tornadoes and flooding that there are FSA programs available to assist with recovery.

"The damage done by the recent severe weather has made things very difficult for many of our farmers and ranchers. The disaster assistance programs FSA has available may be an important first step for producers in the recovery process,” said Davidson.

Benefit claims must be filed within 30 days

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development announced today Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits are now available for workers in Dyer, Lake, Obion, Shelby and Stewart counties as a direct result of severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding for the incident period beginning on April 19, 2011, and continuing. The declaration number is FEMA-1979-DR.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam announced today the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved nine counties to receive federal disaster assistance due to tornadoes and flash flooding in the state on April 4 and 5, 2011.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Major General Max Haston announced today that soldiers from the Tennessee Army National Guard’s 1/278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, headquartered in Henderson, have been called to state active duty to assist in disaster relief operations in and around Tiptonville as needed.

Gov. Haslam and Maj. Gen. Haston, the Adjutant General, toured flood-ravaged areas last week to assess the situation. The order to bring in National Guard soldiers came after they viewed the affected areas.

DHS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR ELIGIBLE RESIDENTS BEGINS MAY 9

NASHVILLE – On Monday, May 9, the Tennessee Department of Human Services, with USDA approval, will begin issuing SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) benefits to eligible residents of four tornado-ravaged counties that have been federally declared disaster areas following the late April storms. The benefits are for eligible residents of Bradley, Greene, Hamilton and Washington counties. Applications for SNAP disaster benefits can be submitted Monday through Saturday, May 9-14, and on Monday, May 16.
