Second Annual Women Veterans Summit to Offer Networking, Educational Opportunities and Entertainment

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs is partnering with the Women Veterans of America Chapter 20 to host the Second Annual Women Veterans Summit at The Inn at Opryland on April 13-14. 

Speakers include State Senator and Marine Veteran Dolores Gresham (R-Somerville) as well as Associate Director of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs Center for Women Veterans Dr. Betty Moseley-Brown.    

Tennessee State Veterans Home Staff and Middle Tennessee State University to Offer Memorable Flight to Veteran Residents (RESCHEDULED)

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder will join three Tennessee State Veterans Home residents for a private flight to honor their military service and their love for flying.  Middle Tennessee State University Professor and pilot Terry Dorris will meet the residents at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport on Wednesday, March 27 at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) to take each of the Veterans on a brief flight.  Medical personnel will also accompany the residents on the flight.  

Governor Haslam to Formally Recognize and Remember Vietnam Veterans for Milestone Anniversary

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder will formally recognize and remember Vietnam Veterans leading into the 40th anniversary of the withdrawal of troops.  The proclamation and presentation event will be held in the Old Supreme Court Chambers in the State Capitol on Monday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. (CDT)

West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery Steering Committee to Re-evaluate Three Potential Sites

NASHVILLE – The West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery Steering Committee is expected to re-evaluate the three potential sites originally chosen by the committee in September 2012.  Over the course of 2012, the Committee visited and evaluated 27 different sites to determine which sites would be ideal for the proposed state veterans cemetery.  Since the committee’s decision to narrow the list to three potential sites, land owners have updated their offers to sell.  On Thursday, March 21 at 4:00 p.m. (CDT) the Steering Committee will meet at the Welcome Center at Parkers Crossroads to re-evaluate the properties.

Flight for Tennessee State Veterans Home Residents in Murfreesboro Canceled Due to Inclement Weather

NASHVILLE – Inclement weather has caused the cancellation of the flight for three Tennessee State Veterans Home residents in Murfreesboro today.  The flight was to be offered by Middle Tennessee State University Pilot and Professor Terry Dorris at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport. 

The flight will be rescheduled for a later date and another media advisory will be issued with the update on the date and time.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder joins the Tennessee State Veterans Homes Board in celebrating the announcement from U.S. News & World Report 2013 which names the Tennessee State Veterans Homes in Knoxville and Murfreesboro among the best in the country.

U.S. News rated more than 15,000 nursing homes using data research on nursing home safety, health inspection and staffing.  The source of the data originates from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  In 2012, CMS issued five star ratings to the Ben Atchley State Veterans’ Home in Knoxville and the Tennessee State Veterans’ Home in Murfreesboro.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs Assistant Commissioner Don Smith will host a community meeting on March 16, 2013 at Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2108 at 2905 Buffalo Road in Johnson City at 3:00 p.m. (EDT).  Smith would like to meet with Washington County Veterans, dependents and surviving family members to discuss the need for a County Veterans Service Officer in Washington County.  Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs (TDVA) Veterans Benefits Representatives will also be available to file claims, answer questions and provide updated information regarding pending Veterans’ claims for federal benefits.
