TDOT Halts Highway Construction for Busy Holiday Travel Period

NASHVILLE – Road construction will not slow travelers’ busy Christmas and New Year’s travel holidays.  The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is once again halting all lane closure activity on interstates and state highways in anticipation of higher traffic volumes across the state.  

No temporary lane closures will be allowed for construction on Tennessee roadways beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 22, 2012 through 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.  

TDOT Ready to Tackle Winter Weather

NASHVILLE – Despite the mild start to winter, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is stocked and ready to clear roadways of ice and snow this season. Over the last several weeks, salt supplies have been replenished in all 95 counties, and crews have readied snow plows and brine trucks for the winter season.

“Even small amounts of snow or ice can cripple our transportation system and create dangerous conditions for motorists,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “We have more than 1200 TDOT employees who are ready to mobilize quickly in the event of winter weather and they will work until our roads are clear.”

TDOT Announces Aeronautics Grants for Five Tennessee Airports

NASHVILLE— The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced today that state aeronautics grants totaling $361,950 have been approved for five Tennessee airports.

Airports receiving grants include:

Bolivar (Hardeman County) – William L. Whitehurst Field

Smyrna (Rutherford County) – Smyrna Airport

Gallatin (Sumner County) – Sumner County Regional Airport

Union City (Obion County) – Everett-Stewart Regional Airport

McMinnville (Warren County) – Warren County Memorial Airport

Five Innovative Green Infrastructure and Low-Impact Development Projects Chosen

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, in partnership with the Tennessee Stormwater Association, the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Tennessee Department of Transportation, today awarded $127,500 to five local governments to fund green infrastructure and low-impact development projects beginning January 2013.

No Lane Closures on Tennessee Highways During the Thanksgiving Holiday

NASHVILLE – Thanksgiving travelers will enjoy a smooth drive through Tennessee again this year during this busy travel holiday.  The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will halt all lane closure activity on interstates and state highways in anticipation of higher traffic volumes across the state.  All construction related lane closures will be stopped beginning at noon on Wednesday, November 21 until 6:00 a.m. Monday, November 26.


“Nearly a million travelers in Tennessee are expected to drive to their holiday destination this year,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “Halting road work during this busy time will provide maximum capacity on our roadways and help alleviate congestion, especially during the predicted peak travel days of Wednesday and Sunday.”

Announce Welcome Center Recycling Program

NASHVILLE – America Recycles Day is Thursday, Nov. 15, and the Department of Environment and Conservation is joining other state, county and city agencies across Tennessee, providing several opportunities for citizens to reduce waste and make a difference. In addition, TDEC, TDOT and Tourist Development are pleased to announce the implementation of the Welcome Center Recycling Program at welcome centers across the state.
