Dekalb County Man Charged with Sales Tax Evasion

SMITHVILLE, Tenn. - The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to the arrest of Michael G. Cantrell, age 54, on charges of sales tax evasion by filing false and fraudulent documents with the Dekalb County Clerk’s Office.

 MEMPHIS- The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to the indictment and subsequent arrest of Justin Foster (age 34) for sales tax evasion and theft. On Nov. 22, 2010, Foster, former owner of the Midtown Wine and Spirits located at 2541 Poplar Avenue in Memphis, Tenn., was arrested by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.

Revenue to Conduct Diesel Fuel Compliance Checks in White County on Nov. 17

Sparta, Tenn. - The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue will be conducting roadside diesel fuel compliance checks in White County during daylight hours on Wednesday, Nov. 17. US Internal Revenue Service fuel compliance officers also often participate in these checks and may be present at this location as well as Department of Safety representatives checking registrations and IFTA stickers.

Russellville Business owner Arrested on Sales Tax Evasion Charges

Morristown, Tenn. – The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to the indictment and subsequent arrest of Manfred Shoemaker, age 36, for sales tax fraud. On Nov. 4, Shoemaker, former officer of A-1 Tire & Auto Repair, Inc., located in Russellville, Tenn., was arrested by the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Department. Bond was set at $24,000.

Deadline to File Flood Relief Sales Tax Refund Claims is Nov. 30

NASHVILLE -The Tennessee Department of Revenue is reminding Tennesseans affected by flooding and other effects of the severe storms in early May of the approaching deadline for filing flood relief claims. These claims are for all eligible purchases made between May 1, 2010and September 30, 2010to replace damaged or destroyed items, and must be filed with the Department of Revenue by Nov. 30, 2010.

 NASHVILLE – Last legislative session, the 106th General Assembly enacted Public Chapter 530, shifting the administration and collection of business tax from local municipalities and counties to the Department of Revenue. With this change, the Department of Revenue is using its resources and experience in tax administration to provide greater efficiency in the collection process and increased revenue for the State and for local governments. Classification 4 taxpayers must file and pay with the Department of Revenue by Nov. 30. Businesses will continue to obtain business licenses from the county clerks and/or municipal officials.

NASHVILLE- The Tennessee Department of Revenue will hold its next free bimonthly new business workshop on Nov. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the department's Murfreesboro Road office, located at 1321 Murfreesboro Road in Nashville. The workshop will be held on the eighth floor.

MEMPHIS - The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to the Oct. 24 arrest of Jamil A. Alabdi of Millington, Tenn., age 39, in Shelby County. Alabdi, the owner of Bull Market #1, located in Millington, Tenn., Bull Market #9, located in Covington, Tenn., and Bull Market #12, located in Munford, Tenn., was arrested by deputies of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.

NASHVILLE  Commissioner Charles Trost has restructured the Tennessee Department of Revenue to ensure that tax enforcement policies are uniformly and consistently implemented. As part of the reorganization, department veterans Arnold Clapp and David Gerregano have been named Assistant Commissioners, responsible for maintaining compliance and uniform tax policies, and upholding the standards and credibility of the department.
