Cleveland Businessman Pleads Guilty

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Today Andrew Whitney Thompson Sr., president of Cleveland Tire Center, Inc., located at 4699 North Lee Highway in Cleveland, pled guilty to 36 counts of sales tax fraud, a violation of Tenn. Code Ann. Section 67-1-1440(g). The Tennessee Department of Revenue’s Special Investigations Section conducted the investigation leading to today’s guilty plea.

 

Maryville Businessman Pleads No Contest To Sales Tax Fraud

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Today Edward Dwayne Cunningham, owner of Beds To Go, pled no contest to three counts of sales tax fraud, a violation of Tenn. Code Ann. Section 67-1-1440(g). The Tennessee Department of Revenue’s Special Investigations Section conducted the investigation leading to today’s plea.

“Tennessee’s tax structure depends on taxpayers voluntarily complying with the laws,” said Commissioner Loren L. Chumley. “Taxpayers who collect but intentionally do not remit sales tax breach the public trust. This case underscores our commitment to collecting all taxes due the state of Tennessee.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Department of Revenue will hold its next free bimonthly new business workshop on Nov. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the department’s Johnson City regional office, located at 204 High Point Drive.

This free workshop is designed to assist those encountering business-related taxes for the first time. Tax specialists from various local and state agencies will provide the basic information needed to comply with registration and tax requirements. During the session, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to these tax specialists, ask questions, and receive materials explaining tax responsibilities and providing contact information. Areas of discussion will include business tax, sales and use tax, unemployment tax and tax enforcement procedures.

AGENCY’S RE-DESIGNED WEB SITE REFLECTS NEW RESPONSIBILITIES

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Department of Revenue reminds citizens that all functions relating to the Division of Title and Registration in the Tennessee Department of Safety were transferred to the Department of Revenue on July 1. As part of this transfer of responsibility, the Department of Revenue also unveiled a re-designed Web site, www.Tennessee.gov/revenue, updated with its new customers in mind. The department encourages customers to visit the Web site for information related to title and registration.

Sales Tax Holiday NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee ’s first annual sales tax holiday is only two weeks away, and Governor Phil Bredesen is reminding Tennesseans about this long weekend of savings for families doing back-to-school shopping for supplies and clothing. The state’s first annual sales tax holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 4 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6.
