Tennessee Department of Revenue To Hold Bimonthly New Business Workshops

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - These free workshops are designed to assist those encountering business-related taxes for the first time. Tax specialists from various local and state agencies will provide the basic information needed to comply with registration and tax requirements. During the session, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to these tax specialists, ask questions, and receive materials explaining tax responsibilities and providing contact information. Areas of discussion will include business tax, sales and use tax, unemployment tax and tax enforcement procedures.

Nashville Businessman Pleads Guilty to Sales Tax Evasion Charges

On April 26, 2007, Davidson County Criminal Court Judge Steve Dozier accepted Gunvantrai H. Patel’s guilty plea to three counts of sales tax evasion relating to his former business, Family Inns of America located at 3430 Percy Priest Drive, Nashville, Tennessee. The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation of 56-year-old Patel that led to today’s plea.

 

Special Sales Tax Holiday Offers Families Savings This Weekend

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The special sales tax holiday is fast approaching and offers three days of tax breaks for families shopping for school supplies, clothing and computers. The special one-time April sales tax holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, April 27 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 29.

“I’m so pleased that the General Assembly seized the opportunity to act in the interest of Tennessee families by granting a second sales tax holiday in 2007,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “As a result of common sense budgeting, this and other sales tax holidays in the future will be possible.”

 

Revenue Investigation Leads To Arrest Of Memphis Businesswoman On Tax Evasion And Theft Charges

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Gloria Stine Hayes, owner of the now defunct Shoes For U located in Memphis, Tenn., was arrested by officers from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office on April 11. A warrant stemming from indictments returned by the Shelby County Grand Jury for evasion of sales tax due the state of Tennessee and theft of property of more than $1,000 was issued for her arrest. Bond was set at $1,000.

Revenue Makes Professional Privilege Tax Filing Easy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - For members of the 22 professional groups required to file professional privilege taxes annually on June 1, the process takes less than five minutes, thanks to the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s e-filing application and credit card payment option.

The Department of Revenue’s online tax filing service at www.Tennessee.gov/revenue allows filers to submit their personal information, select their professions, make a payment by credit card or electronic funds transfer and receive confirmation of their filing with a only few clicks of the mouse.

Tennessee Department Of Revenue Investigation Results In Guilty Plea By East Ridge Business Owner

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to the indictment, arrest and subsequent conviction of Jerry Ray Chapman, former owner of Choo Choo Computer Forms, 5312 Ringgold Road, East Ridge, Tenn., on sales tax evasion charges. On April 3, 2007, Chapman pled guilty in Hamilton County Criminal Court to 13 counts of sales tax fraud. The court placed Chapman on five years probation and ordered him to make restitution to the state in the amount of $21,632.64.
