NASHVILLE - Tennessee’s unemployment rate for the month of January is 4.8 percent, down from the seasonally adjusted December 2006 rate of 4.9 percent, Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development James Neeley announced today. In 2006, Tennessee’s unemployment rate for the month of January was 5.2 percent. The national unemployment rate for January is 4.6 percent, up from the December rate of 4.5 percent.

 

TOSHA Works to Reduce Sharps Injuries in Tennessee Healthcare Facilities

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA) announces a targeting initiative to reduce sharps injuries in the healthcare industry. Nationwide the CDC estimates that each year 385,000 needle sticks and other sharps-related injuries are sustained by hospital-based healthcare personnel, an average of 1,000 sharps injuries per day. In 2005, Tennessee healthcare workers sustained approximately 3,000 sharps injuries in hospitals and ambulatory surgical treatment centers.

Workers Comp Reform Increases Penalties to Insurance Companies and Employers

NASHVILLE – In 2004 the Workers’ Compensation Penalty Program was created in response to the Workers’ Compensation Reform Act. Since the inception of the Penalty Program the division has collected close to $300,000 in penalties from insurance carriers and employers who are not abiding by the new laws. The most common penalty is for late payment of benefits.
