17 Counties Now Approved for Disaster Unemployment Benefits
 
NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development announced today that Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits are now available for workers in Gibson and Lauderdale counties as a direct result of severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding for the incident period beginning on April 19, 2011, and continuing. This is an amendment to declaration number FEMA-1979-DR.

NASHVILLE – County non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for April 2011, released today, show that the rate decreased in 46 counties, increased in 41 counties, and stayed the same in eight counties.

Department Of Labor Prepares For Reinstatement Of Unemployment Benefits

RETROACTIVE BENEFITS AVAILABLE TO ELIGIBLE CLAIMANTS

NASHVILLEThe Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development is making preparations to reinstate unemployment benefits for claimants in the Extended Benefit (EB) program.  Tennessee triggered off of the federal extension of benefits in mid-April.  On May 21, 2011, the General Assembly passed legislation to retroactively reinstate the Extended Benefit (EB) program back to April 16, 2011.  The bill will become law upon signing by Governor Haslam.

Seasonally Adjusted Rate Up 0.1 From March
 
NASHVILLE – Tennessee Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development Karla Davis announced today Tennessee’s unemployment rate for April was 9.6 percent, up 0.1 from the March rate.  The national unemployment rate for April 2011 was 9.0 percent, 0.2 percentage point higher than the March rate.

19 COMPANIES AWARDED GRANTS TRAINING 648 EMPLOYEES

NASHVILLE– Governor Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner Karla Davis have awarded $378,895 in job training grants to 19 companies across the state. Incumbent Worker Training grants assist employers with upgrading skills and avoiding layoffs for their employees.

The Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development announced today Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) unemployment benefits are now available for workers in Bledsoe, Cocke, Johnson, McMinn, Monroe and Rhea counties as a direct result of severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and associated flooding for the incident period of April 25, 2011, to April 28, 2011. This is Amendment 1 of the declaration for the State of Tennessee (FEMA-1974-DR).  Persons in these six counties must file their claim for DUA unemployment benefits within 30 days of this announcement (June 6, 2011).
