Nine Tennessee Sites Added to the National Register of Historic Places

Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Historical Commission has announced nine Tennessee sites have been added to the National Register of Historic Places.  The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation.  It is part of a nationwide program that coordinates and supports efforts to identify, evaluate and protect historic resources.  The Tennessee Historical Commission administers the program in Tennessee.

Bredesen Announces Parks and Recreation Grant

GRANT WILL HELP CITY OF ETOWAH CREATE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

Nashville, Tenn. – Governor Phil Bredesen and Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke today announced the city of Etowah will received a $50,000 Tennessee Recreation Initiative Program, or TRIP, grant to help establish a parks and recreation department and hire a professional parks and recreation director.

Preliminary Report Shows Drop in Deadly Holiday Crashes

Nashville, Tennessee — The Tennessee Department of Safety announced today that preliminary reports indicate eight people were killed on Tennessee roadways over the 2008 Labor Day holiday, compared to 17 fatalities last year. The 2008 Labor Day holiday period started at 6:00 p.m., on Friday, August 29, 2008, and ran through 11:59 p.m., Monday, September 1, 2008.

OHS, TEMA and Other Agencies Urge Residents to Be Prepared

Nashville, Tennessee — The Tennessee Department of Safety’s Office of Homeland Security (OHS), along with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and Metro Nashville’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) have partnered together to urge all Tennessee residents to take action and be prepared in the case of an emergency.  A joint-news conference was held this morning at the Department of Safety Headquarters in Nashville to kick-off the 5th annual National Preparedness Month.

State Agencies Partner to Reduce School Bus Emissions

TDOT Accepting Applications for New Pilot Diesel Retrofit Program for School Buses

Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is now accepting applications for a new pilot grant project aimed at reducing diesel exhaust emissions from school buses in air quality nonattainment and maintenance areas.  TDOT is partnering with the Department of Environment and Conservation to provide $1 million in competitive grant funds to retrofit diesel engines in older school buses.
