Tennessee Announces $3.15 Million for Fruits and Veggies

NASHVILLE– The Tennessee Department of Education today announced 156 schools will receive funding for the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program (FFVP) for the 2011-12 school year. A total of $3.15 million was  provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to purchase, prepare and distribute fresh fruits and vegetables at no charge to students 8th-grade and below.

ASD Launches Charter School Application and Start-up Funding Program

NASHVILLE— Tennessee’s Achievement School District (ASD) has announced the release of a request for qualifications (RFQ) from organizations interested in opening charter schools in ASD attendance zones for the 2012-2013 school year. In addition to the RFQ, the ASD will be awarding $6.8 million in start-up funding as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Investing in Innovation (i3) grant. Both the charter and i3 grant are being released the same day Chris Barbic’s official duty begins in his new role as ASD Superintendent.

NASHVILLE-- Tennessee Commissioner of Education Kevin Huffman will testify before the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Education and the Workforce. His testimony will highlight the role that teachers and teacher evaluation can play in the effort to build a better education system as Tennessee’s plan to implement a statewide teacher evaluation system goes into effect this coming school year. The full committee hearing, “Education Reforms: Exploring Teacher Quality Initiatives,” will explore ways state and local school districts are encouraging and supporting more effective teachers in classrooms.

Legislation continues progress in education reform making state more attractive to business

MEMPHIS – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today held a ceremonial signing of his charter schools bill, HB 1989/SB 1523 at Freedom Preparatory Academy in Memphis, legislation lifting the cap on the number of charter schools allowed in the state and opening enrollment to more students.
