Tennessee Strives for Diversity Among Educators

Nashville, TN- The Tennessee Department of Education has embarked on a two-year project to improve the recruitment and retention of minority teachers across the state with the goal of maintaining a diverse teaching force reflective of Tennessee’s increasingly multi-cultural communities.

Outstanding Tennessee Educators Honored

Nashville , TN- Three Tennessee Vocational-Technical Education VTE directors were recently honored for demonstrating outstanding innovation in their field. Lauderdale County VTE Director Sue Toles received the state Pioneer Award honoring exceptional directors with five years of experience or less. Rutherford County VTE Director Kay Nixon and Cleveland City VTE Director Steve Clariday both received Trailblazer Awards, which recognizes accomplished directors with six years of experience or more.

Tennessee Students Receive National Award

Nashville, TN- Two Tennessee students were named national winners of Entrepreneurship/Placement Proficiency awards at the 78th National FFA Convention. Ryan Jernigan, a graduate of East Robertson High School in Robertson County and Jeremy Cook, a senior at East Robertson High School, were recognized for diversified crop production and specialty crop production respectively.

Tennessee´s Children with Disabilities Narrow Achievement Gap

Nashville, TN- Tennessee was recently recognized by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings as one of five states leading the nation in closing the achievement gap for students with disabilities. The number of K-8 students with special needs meeting academic standards in reading/language arts jumped 27 percent, from 54 percent to 69 percent, in 2004-05. The number meeting math performance standards increased 22 percent.”I am proud to represent a state that has made raising the academic success of students who receive special education services a priority,” Education Commissioner Lana Seivers said.

Tennessee Agricultural Education Advisor Receives National Award

Nashville , TN- The National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) recently honored Tennessee Agricultural Education Advisor Steven Gass with the Outstanding Service Citation Award in recognition of his contributions to his field. NAAE is the professional association for agricultural educators housed at the University of Kentucky in Lexington .
