Cumberland and Wayne Counties Honored for Strategic Planning Efforts

 NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty applauded Cumberland and Wayne counties on their 2010 Commitment Awards presented on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011 by the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence (TNCPE). The two Three-Star communities have completed a rigorous evaluation and feedback process based on criteria from the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program.

$200 Million Investment to Bring 275 HQ and Production Jobs to Tennessee

NASHVILLE – Governor Bill Haslam and Commissioner Bill Hagerty of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development today joined with Brian Heery, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell to announce the company’s decision to invest $200 million to build a production facility for electric transformers in the Rivergate Industrial Park in Memphis, Tennessee, creating up to 275 new jobs. The new facility will produce extra-high voltage shell type power transformers and will be Mitsubishi’s national headquarters for the production of heavy electrical equipment. Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc is part of a business group owned by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Tokyo, Japan.

Statewide Camps Help Teachers Design Energy Conservation Education Programs

NASHVILLE – Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty and ECD’s Energy Policy Office announced today that applications are now available online for the 2011 Energy Camps. The three-day educational sessions provide K-12 teachers with the information and resources needed to teach the science of energy and energy conservation in the classroom and to guide students in becoming leaders in their school and community.
