NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Department of Correction is awarding Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennesee, lead agency for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Tennessee Amachi initiative, $300,000 to serve children in Tennessee through the Big Brothers Big Sisters Tennessee Amachi Initiative.

Inmate Death investigation

WARTBURG - The Department of Correction is investigating the death of an inmate at the Morgan County Correctional Complex.  Cecil Smith, 37, was found dead inside his cell at approximately 6:47 a.m. on Friday morning.  Smith's death appears to have been the result of a suicide.  An autopsy will be performed by the state medical examiner.

TDOC Seeks Help Locating Escapee

NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Department of Correction is asking for the public's assistance in locating an escaped inmate who may now be in northern Alabama or Florida. 

Arthur Milks, 38, escaped from the Henderson County, Tennessee jail on Sunday, July 25 by jumping over a fence.  Sometime between 6:30 Tuesday night and 7:30 this morning, Milks is believed to have broken into an Alabama Department of Transportation office in Moulton, Alabama and stolen clothes, food and a 2010 white Ford F-150 pickup truck.  The truck has four doors, a black bed cover, an antenna bolted to the roof and the license tage number S5066A.

Riverbend Officer Assaulted

NASHVILLE - A correctional corporal at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville is recovering this morning after being attacked by an inmate.  Corporal Rafael Morales was stabbed multiple times by inmate Kevin Goff at approximately 7:21 p.m. Tuesday night.  Cpt. Morales was in stable condition at Vanderbilt Medical Center with stab wounds to his head, arms and abdomen.

Bredesen Commutes Death Sentence Commutation to Life in Prison for Gaile Owens

Bredesen Commutes Death Sentence
 
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today commuted the death sentence of Gaile Owens to life imprisonment. The Governor announced the commutation at the Capitol today, citing the extraordinary sentence compared to similar Tennessee cases, that Ms. Owens consistently admitted her guilt and that she had accepted a conditional plea agreement for life imprisonment prior to her original trial as the reasons for granting the commutation.

TDOC Flood Benefit

ONLY - The Turney Center Industrial Prison is doing its part to help flood victims on the road to recovery.  More than 50 TDOC employees experienced significant loss during the May floods.  Six Turney Center employees suffered damage.  On Wednesday, a special benefit will be held at the prison to help raise money for staff affected by the floods.

ONLY - It may sound a little odd to hear that some of the hottest hairstyles around are being designed inside a Tennessee prison.  The cosmetology school at Turney Center Industrial Prison has been achieving great success and helping inmates prepare for careers away from prison.  This week, the inmates will put their new skills to the test by competing in the Turney Center Hair Show.

NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Department of Correction has discovered some encouraging news in its latest study on recidivism.  The just released report shows that felons released from TDOC prisons are now less likely to return to custody.
