NASHVILLE, TN – February 3-9 is National Burn Awareness Week, and the State Fire Marshal's Office is joining the American Burn Association to promote this year's scald prevention theme.

“Although anyone can sustain a scald burn, certain people are more likely to be scalded – infants, young children, older adults and people with disabilities. These high-risk groups are also more likely to require hospitalization, suffer complications and experience a difficult recovery,” says State Fire Marshal and Commerce & Insurance Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak. “Most burn injuries occur in the person’s own home, and the vast majority of these injuries can be prevented.”

Tuesday, February 05, 2013 | 04:04 pm

NASHVILLE, TN – Without looking, what is the value of the contents of your home covered by insurance? Is a flood covered? If someone is hurt while visiting you, will your insurance pay medical expenses?

Whether you’re a renter or an owner, the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) Insurance Division suggests you review all your insurance policies annually. It is a chance to brush up on what is covered, and to evaluate whether the coverage is still adequate (or too much) for your needs. Here, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), of which TDCI is a member, provides tips for consumers.

Monday, February 04, 2013 | 12:33 pm

NASHVILLE, TN – Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and some consumers are banking on online dating as a way to hatch a serious relationship. Unfortunately, some fraud artists are also banking on online dating as a way to scam people out of their money.

Relationship scams, also known as sweetheart swindles, often follow this pattern:

You meet someone on a dating site and things get serious. You send messages, talk on the phone, trade pictures and maybe even make marriage plans. Soon, you find out the person you met, who claimed to be an American professional, is going to Nigeria or another country for work. Once he or she is there, that person needs your help, asking you to wire money.

State Fire Marshal’s Office urges safety in manufactured homes

Friday, January 11, 2013 | 02:42 pm

NASHVILLE, TN – The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging residents of manufactured homes – also known as mobile homes or trailers – to practice fire safety.

More than 250,000 of these homes exist in Tennessee.

“Fires move more quickly in smaller spaces, leaving occupants with less time to escape. This is why it is crucial to have working smoke alarms installed in all homes,” State Fire Marshal and Commerce & Insurance Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak says. “Develop and practice a home fire escape with your loved ones so that everyone knows what to do when the alarm sounds.”

Start 2013 smart by checking your credit report

Thursday, January 10, 2013 | 05:16 pm

NASHVILLE, TN – The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance’s Consumer Affairs Division is urging consumers to start the year off with a free review of their credit report. Gaps in your computer’s security, a data breach at a company you patronize, even a failure to properly dispose of private information – all can lead to cases of stolen identities.

“Consumers can fight identity theft by monitoring and reviewing their credit report,” Consumer Affairs Director Gary Cordell says. “You may request your free credit report online, by phone or through the mail. New accounts opened with your identity will appear on your report, revealing any potential cases of identity fraud to you.”
