Foreign lottery scams: You can’t win a contest you didn’t enter

Nashville, TN – “Congratulations! You are our $100 million sweepstakes winner!” Sound familiar? Scams like this circulate daily. Their goal is to get your money or personal information.

Whether you receive notification via telephone, e-mail or direct mail telling you that you have won foreign lotteries from Canada or from as far away as Europe, you are asked to reply with personal information in order to receive the winnings. Scammers take that information and you never get the lottery money – which never existed. These scammers also might tell you that you have to pay to cover taxes and service charges, asking you to wire money in order to receive your prize. 

Tenn. to honor its fallen firefighters Saturday in annual memorial service

NASHVILLE, TN – Firefighters lost in the line of duty will be honored at the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy’s annual memorial service at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. Commerce and Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Julie Mix McPeak will provide remarks. 

“At Commerce and Insurance – which includes the State’s Fire Prevention Division – we cherish the courageous, selfless service of Tennessee’s firefighters. We also take seriously our efforts to train them and to honor those who nobly give their lives in the line of duty,” McPeak said.

NASHVILLE, TN – As Tennesseans pack up and head out to their favorite campsites, the State Fire Marshal's Office urges campers to be aware of carbon monoxide dangers in and around tents and RVs. 

Carbon monoxide (CO), often called “the silent killer,” is an invisible, odorless gas created when fuels (such as kerosene, gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely. Carbon monoxide can result from a number of camping equipment, such as including barbecue grills, portable generators or other fuel-powered devices.

July Disciplinary Action Report

NASHVILLE- The disciplinary action report is issued each month by Commerce and Insurance's Division of Regulatory Boards. Each board and commission is empowered to take disciplinary action, including revocation of licenses and assignment of civil penalties, against license holders found guilty of violationg laws governing their professions. The report is a useful tool for Tennesseans looking to do business with one of the licensed professions.
