State/Local Governments Form Partnership to Improve Compliance, Increase Revenue and Simplify Tax Process for Business Owners
 
NASHVILLE – This past legislative session, the 106th General Assembly enacted Public Chapter 530, shifting the administration and collection of business tax from local municipalities and counties to the Department of Revenue. With this change, the Department of Revenue will use its resources and experience in tax administration to collect the business tax, resulting in greater efficiency in the collection process and increased revenue for the State and for local governments.

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen and First Lady Andrea Conte hosted families from across Tennessee this evening for “A Tennessee Season to Remember,” an annual holiday memorial event to honor Tennesseans who have lost their lives to violent crime.
 
“The devastation of losing a family member to violent crime can become even more difficult to bear during the holidays,” Conte said. “This event is an opportunity for families to honor their loved ones by joining with others who’ve experienced a similar loss to remember those they love and celebrate the lives they led.”

Report Outlines Areas in Need of Improvement; Provides Recommendations

NASHVILLE - Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke and Deputy Commissioner Paul Sloan announced today the receipt of a report by the Advisory Board put in place by Environment and Conservation following the TVA Kingston coal ash spill. 
 
The report is titled, “Lessons Learned from the TVA Kingston Dredge Cell Containment Facility Failure: TDEC Advisory Board Recommendations for Safe Performance.” It outlines the primary issues found at the TVA Kingston facility, discusses the ongoing evaluation of other TVA facilities, weighs in on the Root Cause Analysis initially published by AECOM in June 2009, and makes several recommendations for future management of coal ash in Tennessee.

Lumina Foundation Awards THEC $1.2 Million for Statewide Efforts to Graduate More Students within Existing Resources while Ensuring Quality

 

NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Higher Education Commission today announced the Lumina Foundation for Education will spend up to $1.2 million in Tennessee on a multi-year initiative to implement model programs for re-enrolling and graduating adult students who have left college and revising the state’s higher education funding formula and Performance Funding program. The grant, which comes amid budget shortfalls and rising college enrollments, is one of seven awarded nationally as part of the foundation’s effort to increase productivity by promoting significant changes in how states fund and deliver higher education.

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and First Lady Andrea Conte invite the young and young at heart to join them as they host the lighting of the State Capitol Christmas tree at 5 p.m. CST on Monday, November 30.  This year’s holiday festivities will include a special appearance by two of Santa’s reindeer.  They will be on display beginning at 4 p.m. on the south side of the State Capitol roundabout (Charlotte Avenue side).
 
In the spirit of the holiday season, contributions of canned and non-perishable food items for Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee will also be accepted.

Recovery Act Grant Enhances Green Job Employment Search

Automotive Workers Will More Easily Connect with Green Industries
 
NASHVILLEWorkers in the automotive industry will find it easier to direct their job search activities to occupations in green industries as a result of a research grant awarded the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development.
 
The U.S. Department of Labor announced the $765,000 Recovery Act grant to the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development to create labor market data to assess economic activity in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries and identify occupations and skill requirements within those industries. The focus of the research is to assist workers affected by significant automotive-related restructurings to connect to career pathways in green industries.
